On a seemingly ordinary morning on March 17, 1950, the small town of Farmington, New Mexico, became the epicenter of an extraordinary event that would challenge our understanding of what lurks beyond the Earth’s atmosphere. Between 9:15 a.m. and noon, approximately 3,000 residents witnessed a series of inexplicable aerial phenomena, involving multiple unidentified flying objects (UFOs) that defied conventional explanation.
The series of sightings commenced at 9:15 a.m. with the appearance of about a dozen shiny “saucer-like discs” zipping through the sky. These objects, which hovered above Farmington for about ten minutes before vanishing to the northeast, were just a prelude to the astonishing events that would follow. At 10:30 a.m., a red object, accompanied by three silvery discs, engaged in maneuvers reminiscent of an aerial dogfight. Then, at 11:15 a.m., an overwhelming swarm of 50 to 100 objects was observed by multiple credible witnesses, including former Army Engineer Captain Clayton J. Boddy Jr. and private pilot John Eaton. These objects, described as being twice the size of a B-29 bomber, performed intricate aerial formations at speeds and altitudes that left even seasoned observers bewildered.
Harold F. Thatcher, the director of the Farmington branch of the US Soil Conservation Service, managed to triangulate the flight path of one of these discs, estimating its speed at a staggering 1,000 miles per hour, at altitudes between 15,000 and 20,000 feet. Despite the broad daylight and the presence of numerous reliable witnesses, this event quickly faded from public discourse, as if it never occurred.
